15 HD channels have been dropped from my channel lineup today, including HD News. Voom HD is a suite of HD channels that was created by Rainbow HD Holdings LLC, a subsidiary of Cablevision Systems Corporation.
Voom marketed itseld as the largest collection of HD channels on Television and certainly had a variety of programming that showed the power of high definition content.
The company blamed the decision on a decision by Dish Network (DISH) to drop carriage of the channels. That left Cablevision itself as the only distributor of the channels. Rainbow has sued Dish for $1 billion for pulling out of a 15-year deal to carry the channels.
Voom will continue to operate its international business, which has 32 million subscribers in 36 countries. Cablevision will replace the Voom channels on its own network with other high-def channels.
The shutdown of the domestic channels will result in an unspecified number of layoffs.
